Genetics Society of America Mentorship Award
Opens Aug 1 2025 12:00 AM (EDT)
Deadline Oct 1 2025 11:59 PM (EDT)
Description

Application deadline: October 1, 2025, 11:59 p.m. EDT.

During a two-year cycle, award years will alternate between honoring mentors who are a) PIs or faculty of any kind b) mentors who are non-faculty members—early career scientists (graduate students or postdoctoral scholars) and scientific staff. That is, if a PI or faculty member receives an award one year, the next year, the award will go to an early career scientist or scientific staff member.

If you are nominating someone else:

  • Enter the nominee’s email address to the “Add Collaborater” field on the left hand side of the first page before entering the application. The nominee will then receive an email to allow access for completing their portion of the nomination (NIH-style biosketch, Lived-experience statement and demographic survey).

The nomination packet for a GSA Award includes:

  1. Nominator name and contact information (information will auto populate from the GSA membership database)
  2. Nominee name and contact information (if different from the nominee)
  3. Click on "Add Collaborator" button on the left side of the application to enter nominee's email address. After entering email address, click on Send Invite. The nominee will receive an automated email giving them a link to upload their information to the application.
  4. Cover Letter
    1. The Cover Letter should be used to introduce the nominee in 250 words or fewer.
    2.  Nominators should briefly introduce themselves and the nominee and describe their relationship and experience with the nominee.Multiple nominations of the same nominee do not increase the nominee's chance to receive an award. Rather, if there are multiple nominators for a single nominee, GSA encourages the nominators to jointly sign one nomination packet.
    3.  Self-nominees should briefly introduce themselves and indicate for which award they are nominating.
  5. NIH-style biosketch (≤5 pages)
  6.  Lived-experience statement
    1. Nominees should give an overview of their career path and scientific philosophy in 250 words or fewer. They are encouraged to describe their particular approaches to research, mentoring, teaching, and equity, as appropriate, and are welcome to include information about barriers they have faced and/or overcome.
  7.  The total number of mentees the nominee has mentored at the time of nomination, and names of three who will respond to a question in the selection questionnaire
  8. Award-specific questionnaire
  9.  Demographic survey (optional)
    1.  Nominees will be offered the opportunity to provide their demographic information. Nominees are strongly encouraged to answer demographic questions. Demographic information will be kept confidential and will not affect the committee’s decision-making process but will instead help GSA track progress on diversity and inclusion goals over time.
  10. Enter 3 mentees that will provide a statement of how the nominee impacted them.

To start your nomination, click the green “Apply” button in the upper right.

Current GSA Awards Committee members are not eligible to nominate for GSA Awards.

Before submitting your nomination, please review the list of previous recipients. Previous recipients may not be nominated for the same award.

To avoid the appearance of a conflict of interest, individuals should refrain from nominating close family members, including spouses.

For information on the award criteria, see the GSA website.
